明朝 Imperial China Ming Dynasty

The Ming Dynasty was ruled by 16 emperors from 1368 to 1644. It was the last imperial dynasty of China ruled by the Han ethnic majority.

The Ming Dynasty was founded in 1368 by peasant rebel leader Zhu Yuanzhang when they defeated the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty during the Red Turban Rebellion and restore native Han Chinese rule.

At its peak, the empire flourished as a global superpower through monumental architecture, maritime dominance, and a brilliant cultural renaissance. The empire projected its immense wealth and political power by constructing the Forbidden City, reinforcing the Great Wall, and launching Zheng He’s massive naval expeditions across the Indian Ocean. Domestically, it experienced an unparalleled artistic and intellectual golden age, marked by the global demand for Jingdezhen’s cobalt blue-and-white porcelain, producing three of the Four Great Classical Novels The Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature are Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Water Margin, Journey to the West, the rise of Kunqu opera, and the influential neo-Confucian philosophy of Wang Yangming.

The fall of the Ming dynasty in 1644 was caused by a devastating convergence of internal corruption, economic ruin, natural disasters, and foreign invasion. Decades of political neglect by weak emperors allowed corrupt eunuchs to destabilize the central government, while a severe global cooling period known as the Little Ice Age triggered widespread droughts, devastating plagues, and catastrophic famines across northern China. Bankrupted by costly wars and a severe shortage of incoming silver, the government failed to provide disaster relief, provoking massive peasant rebellions led by the warlord Li Zicheng, who successfully captured Beijing and drove the last Ming emperor to suicide. Ming Dynasty rule ended in 1644 when the northern Manchu forces marched through the Great Wall, and defeated the rebels to establish China’s final imperial dynasty, the Qing dynasty.
