长江 Yangtze River

The 6300km Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world. Its also the longest river in Asia and in a single country.Yangtze River flows west of China from its sources in Qinghai towards East China sea at Shanghai. It flows through 11 provinces from Qinghai, Tibet, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shanghai.

The Yangtze River served as the cradle for the Yangtze Civilization, a network of advanced Neolithic and Bronze Age cultures that shaped early Chinese history alongside the Yellow River. Its massive drainage basin provided fertile lands for pioneering rice cultivation, while its waterways formed the primary trade and strategic transport artery connecting inland China to the coast. Major Chinese cities grew precisely at the strategic confluences of the Yangtze River and its principal tributaries, leveraging these intersections as powerful hubs for military defense, regional trade, and transport.

Location:

This 4,500 km upper section of the Yangtze River flows from its source at the glacial headwaters on the Tibetan Plateau down to Hubei Province Yichang.

The upper reaches is comprises of three sub sections of Tuotuo River (沱沱河), Tongtian River (通天河) and Jinsha River (金沙江). The Jinsha River flows towards Yibin.

Qujialing culture (3400–2500 BC)

The late Neolithic Qujialing culture (3400–2500 BC) was mainly along the middle Yangtze River valley in Hubei and Hunan provinces. The site is in Jingshan County, Hubei. This culture developed after the Daxi culture (5000–3300 BC) and eventually transitioned into the highly organized Shijiahe culture.

Shijiahe Culture (c. 2500–1900 BC)

The Late Neolithic and early Bronze Age Shijiahe culture (c. 2500–2000 BCE) flourished was a major civilization in Hubei Province, featuring massive walled settlements, specialized pottery workshops, and exquisite jade artifacts.

Jiangxi Jiujiang Yangtze Bridge

The construction of the bridge stated on 26 December 1973. The work was slow due to lack of funds. Construction resumed in November 1986. The highway was completed on 16 January 1993 while the railway tracks was completed on 1 June 1995.

Liangzhu Culture (c. 3300–2300 BC)

The late Neolithic Liangzhu culture (3300–2300 BCE) flourished in the lower Yangtze River Delta. It was the last Chinese Neolithic jade culture featuring a complex urban capital, massive hydraulic dams, and highly stratified burials rich in ritual jade.
